#MotivationalMonday Marketing... and #MotivationalMonday Marketing Mistakes

#MotivationalMonday Marketing... and #MotivationalMonday Marketing Mistakes

Happy #MotivationalMonday *cringes*.  I just spent what feels like days combing through an abundance of tweets that used this hashtag. While most tweets I viewed made me cringe or roll my eyes, some provided a bit of positivity to my Monday. In my opinion this hashtag is meant to give encouragement to users at the beginning of the week. For the purpose of my analysis I selected tweets from companies and business that used this hashtag for promotional opportunities. I hope some of you laugh at this as much as I did. I don't laugh because they are comical but because they are so far off base from being motivational or were previously composed tweets with a few word changes to make it work for #MotivationalMonday. Although, I did provide a few tweets that seemed to do a good job at both marketing and motivating viewers. I feel like the application of this hashtag when you aren't actually trying to provide motivation is a cheap shot at getting more views. With these all being tweets from companies and with this being a more regular hashtag, it is inevitable that more than just their followers will stumble upon it.

I've decided to help justify my arguments I will be using the thumbs up, thumbs down method. Complicated stuff, right? :-)

Thumbs up= Successful attempt in motivation, oh they marketed themselves too
Thumbs Middle= You tried to market but added in a bit of motivation to make it less obvious
Thumbs Down= You saw #MotivationalMonday trending and jumped at the opportunity to get more attention to your account

So let's look at what we have:

Thumbs Up Worthy Tweets

Bowflex's #MotivationMonday starts the ๐Ÿ‘ It does a great job in motivating and promoting their equipment as you can see below.

They provide us with a quote that you can read without the picture of the treadmill and still feel motivated. It is encouraging to runners (and even those that aren't down for cardio) to tell yourself you can do it and get out there.

Another tweet worthy of a ๐Ÿ‘ belongs to Catalyst Collective:

I read this and really wanted to get my employees and figure out how we can work to the best of our abilities in 365 days. On top of that I have been thinking about this and Catalyst Collective all day. Especially in my work.

This! This tweet is my favorite of all the #MotivationalMonday tweets!

I think I found this easy to enjoy as this organization did the bare minimum, tweeted something motivational, and stopped there. They didn't add feedback to why their company can help motivate you, they simply posted a motivational tweet. So personally I enjoyed their efforts the most.

And to end the thumbs up trend we have a tweet from Chrysalis Communication.

All tweets in this category really seemed like they had a desire to aid in motivation. I am sure we can all conclude all of these tweet's truest intentions were to market and spread their name these at least seemed to put in effort.

 Middle Thumb Gauged Tweets

All of the following tweets didn't seem to put in quite the effort that the tweets above did,

We see here a Toyota ad:

This tweet is effective in the sense that I understand they were trying to stress that you can go into each week and be have endless options to discovery... as long as you drive this car! It seems to me this is a picture they have had in a vault and decided to use it and slap a hashtag on it.

I see where LC Pizza Kit was going with this...
I rated this a middle thumbs up because after I saw it I did try to work a little faster so I could eat sooner ;-)

This one I put in the middle rather than thumbs up because of the way it could make other people feel. Similarly to a tweet you will see below, it compliments one audience but can potentially put salt in the wound for others, making it not as motivational as it could be.

I perceived this as another attempt to promote their festival... but adding the point that it will be better with a friend was meant to be motivational.

I think we can all agree that from this category all tweets had great intentions, just maybe not the best execution which brings me to our final section of...

Thumbs Down Tweets

I hope we can all agree that these accounts probably had little intention to motivate and simply hopped on the Motivational Monday Hashtag to score more views and potential customers. Some of these are laughable in my opinion, like they really felt comfortable putting their name on these tweets??

I can't comfortably give a middle thumb gauge to Kingswook Perfect Smile's #MotivationalMonday  ๐Ÿ‘Ž
I don't see how essentially saying "you can't have peace without a  perfect smile" is motivating. If anything it's a little bit of  a put down. We can conclude it's likely this was an effort to get more attention to their account. Hello, the girl in the picture isn't even SHOWING HER TEETH?

Torn between classifying this as a failed attempt at motivating or just weak marketing so I put it with a ๐Ÿ‘Ž

This is one that kinda made me laugh. "feel motivated, drop off your donations". Maybe a better way to go about this would to have been to show a picture of people in poverty that their donation may go to...

The following tweet deserves a thumbs down for a few reasons...

For one, she posts a promo of some sort every single day with whatever the hashtag is. Seriously like every single day. She may be the tweet that crosses the line of ethical. Few of her tweets are personal messages the rest are promos which begs the question, "is she getting paid for this". From her bio and skimming through her twitter I don't see any where that she admits to being paid by these companies, so if she is and she isn't making that known, I think we have an ethics issue.

The following tweet gets a thumbs down because I was stumbled upon it at 12 am while I was stuffing my face with my favorite study snack, Flipz.
I didn't see the late night snack shaming incredibly motivational.

The following tweets are also rated with a thumbs down simply because they have no motivational content... they really just slapped a hashtag on there and clicked send.

Social Media is a great opportunity for  companies and business to market. It provides a large community with endless potential for their posts to be shared and its very cost effective.
There are ways to do this that is actually appealing to your viewers without breaking laws or making your business seem insensitive. I really wanted to provide what I see as examples of good Motivating Marketing and what I see as a cheap shot at marketing. I don't think it is fair to say that any of these took unethical approaches to making themselves known as users should anticipate seeing things they may not agree with and it was my choice to sit and scroll through all the hashtags.
The thumbs up tweets did a great job at least making it seem like their main intention was to motivate, the middle thumb gauge had an okay idea but maybe not the best execution and the thumbs down capitalized on the popularity of Monday's hashtag to attempt to reel in customers.
